Bloom Where You’re Planted

Author Claire Cook considers herself a late-bloomer having published her first novel in her mid-forties. I knew of Claire’s work because I read the second book she wrote, Must Love Dogs and then picked up a copy of every book that followed.

Years later I met Claire online on the Goodread.com website. Our conversation started after Claire visited my online journal and read some of my writing. At the time I had just written “I Forgot that Sunflower’s Die,” which was just a few lines that touched upon the death of my daughter’s father. Claire had also lost a parent as a child and she shared her story which had recently been published in Good Housekeeping magazine.

Since then Claire’s periodically sends a note cheering on my writing, and with each book she writes I’m reminded that it’s never to late to follow your heart.

Whether you find yourself writing at a child’s swim practice or in the humid, hum of a bustling laundry mat, remember to love what you have and to bloom where your planted.

Here is Claire Cook’s interview on the Today Show…well done, girl:)

well

Confession

Star Trek
Image via Wikipedia

Tonight my son and I went to see Star Trek. It was definitely a film I wanted to see having grown up with a daily dose of the Starship Enterprise and I thought the movie trailer looked fantastic.

After seeing the movie I have to admit that I don’t remember the last time I was so entertained watching a film, I thought Star Trek was just great fun. The acting was very good, the casting was superb and even though the special effects were also very good, the film didn’t rely on its special effects to make it great.

Seeing Star Trek on the big screen is a must…

Live long and prosper:)

Free Annette Yeomans, Jail Bernie Madoff

Bernie Madoff isn’t in jail but Annette Yeomans is? Yeomans is the bookkeeper who embezzled millions and purchasedcloset over 400 pairs of shoes.  If Bernie Madoff’s crimes aren’t serious enough to warrant tossing him in jail, surely any civilized person with an appetite for shoes could understand Yeomans weakness.

I mean lets be honest,  it’s not like any of us went to see Sex and the City to witness Carrie Bradshaw and Big’s wedding. We went for the clothes, we went for the shoes, we went to see a fictitious and mythical man give a woman a really BIG closet.

When I first heard of Yeomans crime and the 400 pairs of shoes my heart  skipped a beat just thinking about Shoesa room fill with that many shoes! All the different styles and designers she could slide her feet into, I sighed. There are things that I can live without but there are  also things that just shouldn’t be missed.

To hell with ballet flats and kitten heels… give me legs that go on forever!

Twilight Free Online?

I’ve started a new blog…under pretty much the same name. I’ve done this because I can’t post advertising in on my WordPress Blog. I don’t know how successful Adsense advertising is but I was curious and thought I’d take a swipe at it.

My first post is the same as this one, Twilight Free Online?

The answer is yes. I found it on a number of sites and you didn’t have to download it. Links to those websites are available if you click the above listed link and scroll to the bottom of the post.

Maybe I’m behind the curve but I really had no idea this was going on until I discovered my daughter watching Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2…I sort of thought that was still in theaters.

In the days that pasted I scoped out the site my daughter was on…it was a veritable video store. Some quality issues…but that was about it. When I noted an older film I wanted to see wasn’t there I did a Google search and low and behold linked to several sites that offered online viewing of exactly what I was looking for.  So far I’ve found Changeling, Twilight, the new James Bond movie Quantum Solace, Four Christmases and everything else you can imagine.

I’m not clear on the legality of these sites or how they manage to stay in operation. They appeared to claim that they have committed no wrong doing because they are merely culling the internet and putting the films in a single location…of course I’m paraphrasing.

That having been said, being able to view online didn’t and hasn’t changed my purchasing decisions. My daughter and I still saw Twilight on the big screen and we’ll still purchase the DVD as soon as its released. We’ll still go to see Australia and we watched a few minutes of Four Christmases which we didn’t plan to see in the first place.

Check out my new temporary site, check out the links to these movie sites and tell me what you think on either blog. Ethical, unethical…would you watch, wouldn’t you watch …thoughts comments?

I Forgot to Tell You What A Nice Ass You Have…

The headlines echoed a scene from the film The American President when Annette Benning’s character Sidney Ellen Wade receives a phone call from the fictitious President of the United States, Andrew Shephard. Assuming the call is a hoax from a co-worker Wade plays along telling the President “I’m so glad you called because I forgot to tell you today what a nice ass you have…and I’m also impressed that you got my phone number given the fact that I don’t have a phone…”  Of course anyone who has seen the classic scene in the film knows that Sidney Ellen Wade was indeed addressing the President when she made the “nice ass” remark…just before she hung up on him.

In equal comedic fashion Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen, determined to avoid being punked by area radio stations notorious for sucessfully duping everyone from Fidel Castro to Hugo Chavez, thought she was avoiding being the butt of someones joke. So when Ros-Lehtinen received a call from a man identifying himself as President Elect Obama, who congratulated her on her re-election, she demonstrated her keen instinct for identifying tom-foolery by telling him he was a better impersonator than the guy on Saturday Night Live and then she hung up.

In an effort to convince Ros-Lehtinen of the legitimacy of the phone call Obama’s Cheif of Staff Rahm Emanuel placed a subsequent call with Obama on the line to assure the congresswoman that it was no joke. Reportedly Ros-Lehtinen said, ‘I really do appreciate it. I love these pranks more than anybody and I’m honored that you would prank me, but I’m gonna hang up.’

It took a third phone call from chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Rep. Howard Berman and even then Ros-Lehtinen requested that Berman disclose an inside joke about a colleague that wasn’t public information…so she could be sure.

According to Ros-Lehtinen, President-Elect Obama thought the experience would help keep his ego in check, should he get too pumped up he reportedly said that he thought his wife would remind him that the congresswoman hung up on him …twice.

Currently, Ros-Lehtinen is being dispatched to Alaska to coach Sarah Palin on side-stepping pranksters… the women are not expected to discuss anyones ass except perhaps the one associated with the DFL… 🙂
